The Diploma in Nautical Science


 The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a 1-year maritime course designed to train students to become Deck Officers on merchant navy ships. After completing the DNS course, students can appear for the MEO (Maritime Education Organization) Class IV examination to obtain a Certificate of Competency (CoC) as a Deck Officer.

Eligibility Criteria for DNS Course

To enroll in the DNS course, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Educational Qualification:

    • 10+2 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM).

    • Minimum 60% aggregate in PCM (some institutes may accept 55%).

    • Some institutes also accept Diploma in Mechanical/ Naval Architecture/ Marine Engineering (50% marks).

  2. Age Limit:

    • Maximum age limit is 25 years (relaxable by 2-3 years for reserved categories).

  3. Medical Fitness:

    • Must pass a medical examination as per DG Shipping (Directorate General of Shipping) standards.

    • Eyesight: 6/6 in both eyes (corrective lenses allowed, but no color blindness).

  4. Entrance Exam:

    • Must qualify for IMU CET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test) or institute-specific entrance exams (like MERI, TMI, etc.).

    • Some institutes also consider JEE Main (Maritime) scores.
