B.Sc. Nautical Science: Course Details

B.Sc. Nautical Science is a 3-year undergraduate degree program designed to train students for a career as a Deck Officer in the Merchant Navy. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical training, including mandatory sea time, to prepare students for maritime careers.



1. Eligibility Criteria

To enroll in B.Sc. Nautical Science, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Academic Qualification:

    • 10+2 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM).

    • Minimum 60% aggregate in PCM (varies by institute).

    • Some institutes accept 50% aggregate for reserved categories.

  • Age Limit:

    • 17–25 years at the time of admission.

  • Medical Fitness:

  • Total Duration: 3 years (divided into 6 semesters).

  • Training Components:

    • 1 year of academic study at a maritime institute.

    • 6 months of pre-sea training (including firefighting, survival techniques, etc.).

    • 18 months of onboard ship training (as a Deck Cadet).

  • STCW (Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping) certification.

  • After sea training, candidates appear for Second Mate (FG) Examination to become a Licensed Deck Officer.


5. Career Prospects

Graduates can work as:

  • Deck Cadet → Third Officer → Second Officer → Chief Officer → Captain (Master Mariner).Shore-based jobs in shipping companies, port management, maritime education, and logistics.


6. Salary & Growth

  • Starting Salary (as Deck Cadet): ₹50,000 – ₹1,00,000 per month (tax-free on international ships).
